Poaching, hunting and animal smuggling have gotten out of control in many African countries. Many animal species are being driven to the brink of extinction by illegal hunting because tusks, horns, fur, bones, meat and other body parts are sought after on the black market. The animals have fewer and fewer places to retreat to where they can seek safety from hunters.

Little mandrill rescued

The EAGLE network, supported by Pro Wildlife, is active in eight African countries. During its dangerous undercover operations, the team regularly seizes ivory, big cat skins, live monkeys, African grey parrots and other protected animals and ensures that those responsible are arrested and brought to justice.

Their goal: to combat corruption and poaching and to strengthen species protection enforcement .

Ivory decoration, ban on trade in ivory

Pro Wildlife is fighting alongside African states in international bodies and agreements for a permanent, worldwide ban on the trade in ivory and strict legal protection for all elephants. They have been campaigning for a ban on the ivory trade in the EU and on exports for years - with success: The EU Commission wants to largely ban ivory exports in 2021 and also regulate trade in the EU more strictly.
