Khaya Sineyile
Khaya Sineyile was born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1983.
He is a largely self-taught artist who trained at the Arts and Media Access Centre (AMAC) from 2004 to 2005. Khaya was selected as an artist in residence at Greatmore Studios in 2009 and later that year for a short residency at the Souk Waqif Art Centre in Doha, Qatar.
In addition to more than 50 group exhibitions at home and abroad, Khaya has presented his works in solo exhibitions, including in 2016 and 2017 at the 99 Loop Gallery, Cape Town.
His works can be found in the collections of Spier, Nando's UK, Truworths, Groote Schuur Hospital and Hollard Insurance, as well as in numerous private collections in South Africa, London, the USA and Germany.
Khaya has been a full-time artist since 2005. He lives and works in Nyanga, Cape Town.
Khaya's paintings tell of things happening socially and in daily life. His subjects range from township scenes to more introspective depictions that relate to children's games and observations on religious hypocrisy, factional struggles and witchcraft.
His confident brushstrokes and thoughtful color palette convey rawness, which he contrasts with cartoonish outlines - a device that sets the figure apart from its background and brings elements of playfulness, witty wit and humor to the often fraught subject matter.
