Bryan Cusack

Bryan Cusack is an Irish-born artist who has lived in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa since 1992. He specialises in sculptures made from driftwood that he collects from local beaches. He uses this wood to depict South African wildlife and human figures in motion. 

After studying art history, Bryan Cusack began a career as an art restorer in Europe. He then worked in the film industry for several years before devoting himself entirely to sculpture in 2006.

Inspired by the wild coast of Pondoland, he found driftwood to be the preferred material for his work. The natural shapes, deep lines and gnarled nuances of driftwood give his sculptures a texture not unlike the natural African landscape. To also protect the environment, he only uses driftwood or objects he finds on the beaches.

The artist now works in a studio near Durban, sculpting his weathered, nature-influenced sculptures overlooking the sea.
