Artist: Bryan Cusack
Name: Dancers
Materials: Driftwood
Size: 100cm
Edition : Single copy
Origin: South Africa
The inspiration for the sculpture of the dancers was trust, connection and the dynamic interplay of power and grace. Captured in a moment of balance and harmony, the dancers embody the synergy and trust inherent in such a powerful duet.
With this piece, the artist wanted to highlight the unity and mutual support of the dancers. The male dancer raising his arm to the sky represents strength and stability, while the female dancer hanging upside down symbolizes grace, confidence, and risk-taking. The form of the sculpture celebrates the connectedness and interdependence required in both dance and life. It highlights the beauty that comes from collaboration and the delicate balance achieved through trust and shared effort. The sculpture conveys a sense of timeless elegance and the enduring power of human connection.
Bryan Cusack, an Irish-born artist, has lived in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa since 1992 and specialises in sculptures made from driftwood that he collects from local beaches. His works primarily depict South African wildlife and human figures in motion. Inspired by the wild coast of Pondoland, he uses the natural shapes and textures of driftwood, which give his sculptures a unique depth. Cusack is careful to only use driftwood or found objects to protect the environment. In his studio near Durban, these weathered, nature-influenced sculptures are created overlooking the sea.
